Social Security Changes Online Login

A recent press release from the Social Security Administration (SSA) announces a transition to the use of Login.Gov for all SSA online accounts and services.

SSA account holders who already have a Login.Gov or ID.Me account do not need to take any action.  Rather, this announcement is particularly critical for those whom created their SSA account prior to September 18, 2021, and are currently using a “my Social Security” account.

To take action with regards to this change, SSA customers can login to their current account.  Upon login, the SSA customer will be presented with the option to transition to Login.Gov as their means of signing in.  Follow the prompts, and the system will provide confirmation upon completion, making it clear that the customer’s account has been successfully linked.

The new Login.Gov account setup will provide SSA customers access to all of the same Social Security accounts and services they are used to.  Online services from Social Security include, but are not limited to, requesting a replacement Social Security card, estimating future benefits, managing current benefits, and more.

Though a cutoff date has not yet been provided, it was stated that the transition to Login.Gov will happen “soon,” with the recommendation being that all SSA customers take immediate action to ensure continued access to their online account.

For the safety of all SSA customers, it is important to note that, unfortunately, fraudulent website may exist with the onset of this change.  These websites often seek to take advantage of elder individuals, and may use websites or links that closely mimic those of the SSA.  These scam sites will ask for personal information, often in an attempt to steal identities.

As a reminder to the importance of being vigilant about online security, SSA recommends customers keep in mind that Social Security uses a .GOV website.  Therefore, all emails related to Social Security should come from a .GOV email address.  Additionally, it is recommended that SSA customers please take care to verify that any websites or links received in electronic communication truly lead to Social Security, at www.SSA.gov.
